Many people, most of the time, move without thinking about what they are doing. The right muscles fire at the right time to prepare, support and execute the desired moment. Sometimes, though, perhaps in response to pain or injury, we change the way we move, using some muscles too much as a stabilising strategy, which can become a ‘lock’ and create knock-on imbalances in the kinetic chain. This article looks at some of the locks that you are likely to see in your patients and how you can treat them.
